With the notable exception of 2020, most people don't think too terribly much about soap on a daily basis - it's (usually) there when you need it, it does a job, sometimes it smells nice, but that's about it. But our soap works hard, doing a rote and thankless job and keeping us healthy, so why not celebrate its presence by elevating a routine and substance that's existed in human societies since 2800 BC?
Saipua is the perfect remedy for that crusty, boring container of Dial you've been using for years: beautifully packaged, handcrafted soaps in a range of incredible, natural ingredients - a far cry above plastic pump tops and uninspired artificial scents. Named for the Finnish word for soap, Saipua was created in 2006 by Sarah Ryhanen as a creative studio that combined her expertise in soap making and floral design. In the eighteen years since, Saipua's headquarters moved to Worlds End - a 107-acre, collaborative homesteading farm and creative residence 40 miles west of Albany, with soap making forming the backbone of its evolution.
Ryhanen and the other residents of Worlds End are the real deal - they produce wool and sheep products from their own flock of Icelandic sheep, as well as ceramics, seasonal pantry items and table decor, through their blend of productive market gardening and permaculture philosophies. Through on-site residencies and their online Worlds End School, they also share instruction on topics from soap-making, ceramics and floral design, to breadmaking, plant medicine, bookkeeping and more.
Saipua's soaps are simple, effective and non-drying (thanks to a high oil content), made from a blend of olive, coconut and castor oils, shea butter and essential oils. They're free from artificial fragrances, dyes and perfumes, and they're easily the best-smelling and packaged soaps we've encountered. From Cedarwood, Saltwater, Clary Sage and Dill, Rose Geranium, Coriander Citrus and more, there's a soap for every preference, and everyone has a favorite (mine's Coffee Mint). If you don't have one yet, stop by the Home store and avail yourself of our Saipua smell buffet - and when you find your favorite, don't forget to pick up a soap dish to give your beautiful new handmade soap the respect and longevity it deserves.
